Cullen’s new music retains his signature cheerful optimism but brings a new maturity and honesty, giving voice to darkness as well as the light. This is all of him, not just the highlights, and it’s all the richer for it.
His new music is more organic, mellower. He’s looked beyond the hip-hop influences that characterised his earlier work with The Roots and Questlove and shifted his focus back to the singer-songwriters who first inspired him to pick up a guitar.
Cullen is re-energised and raring to go, evidenced in the mammoth task of running 12 marathons in 12 days (raising money for Cancer Research), culminating in a gig in Cornwall, his first since September ’22
